Black Nore course details

The course will based at Black Nore beach near Ian’s home in Portishead. If the forecast is too wet then the date will be rearranged to a time suitable for the most participants.

Course Outline:

You’ll get a chance to paint at least two paintings during the day. The nature of the continually changing light means there’s little benefit on working on the same painting beyond two hours because the scene will have changed entirely.

After a brief demo Ian will be available to help with any painting or colour mixing guidance needed.

If the course runs into the evening Ian will discuss capturing a sunset specifically.

What you need to bring

Warm, waterproof clothes, more layers than you think you’ll need.

If you are a complete beginner and don’t want to buy all the kit first then let Ian know beforehand and he can prepare a box, boards, tripod etc set up for you to use for the course.

An easel or pochade box suitable for outdoor painting.

A range of brushes

Something to eat (you’ll be able to go back to Ian’s home).

Oil paints, titanium white, raw umber, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre, a red (red ochre or any brighter red).

Optionally, viridian green, black, alizarin crimson, lemon yellow, cerulean blue or cobalt blue.

A dipper with odourless solvent.

Other info

There are steps and a slope down to the beach, Ian will be available to help carry things.

You might get a bit messy so dress appropriately or bring an apron.
